Long Island Sound Lawn Fertilizer Outreach Targeting Tool

Nitrogen (N) from residential lawn fertilizer is one of the most challenging and persistent problems impacting the health of Long Island Sound (LIS). An interdisciplinary team of researchers from Clark University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Maryland, and the University of Miami collaborated on an effort to better target education and outreach campaigns to reduce the use of lawn fertilizer in areas of greatest impact.

This Story Map and the associated Lawn Fertilizer Outreach Targeting Tool can help identify areas of the watershed for which interventions to reduce lawn fertilizer may have greater impacts.

Resilient Land Mapping Tool

The Resilient Land Mapping Tool, developed by The Nature Conservancy’s Center for Resilient Conservation Science, is an interactive mapping tool that helps users explore climate resilient landscapes across the United States. The tool allows users to view and analyze data on terrestrial resilience, biodiversity, connectivity, and other conservation indicators to support land protection and planning decisions. Users can explore different map layers, analyze specific areas, and download datasets for conservation research and planning. This tool is designed to support conservation efforts that protect biodiversity and maintain ecological functions in a changing climate.

Connections to Long Island Sound

Created by UConn CLEAR in partnership with the Long Island Sound Study, this Population and Demographic Story Map explores the land and people in the Long Island Sound Watershed. From Canada down to the northern coast of Long Island, the watershed is a vastly diverse area in both land and people, populated by nearly 9 million people and characterized by farms, forests, urban centers, beaches, marshes and more. This story map showcases how the Sound is an integral part of the lives of those who live, work, and visit the region every day.
